Wax paper is a fun craft medium to work with. It’s great for many different projects, and we recently made two fun crafts with our friends on a beautiful South Florida Winter day!
We made beautiful Wax Paper Sun Catchers that are wonderful little window decorations for upcoming Valentine’s Day.
To make the Sun Catchers, we first shaved down crayons in the colors that we wanted to use. This is a great way to get the kids involved with preparing for the craft, and it’s also an awesome fine motor skill builder! The kids were all fighting over who got to use the sharpener next! So cute.
Then, the kids spread the crayon shavings onto their sheets on wax paper. I will admit that this was a little bit messy and tons of crayon shavings were all over the floor…all in the name of art! 🙂
Next, I took their creations over to my ironing station, and covered it with an additional sheet of wax paper. Then, I was ready to iron! To do this, make sure you have some towels available. I didn’t use an ironing board, so I placed on towel underneath the wax paper and one on top. You don’t want to iron directly on the wax paper.
After the ironing, we cut them into hearts, punched a hole, added a string, and viola! These can be made into pretty much any shape or color, to be perfect for any occasion.
After we made the Sun Catchers, the kids wanted to go outside, since it was pretty glorious out! So we went outside to play, but the kids had heard me mention “paint” earlier and insisted on painting outside…not a bad idea. So we brought the supplies out to the patio and created some cool Wax Paper Resist Art in the shape of a heart.
This was a very simple activity, but the kids loved it. First I cut out a big heart from a piece of pink paper and used masking tape to attach it to the wax paper.
Then, the kids used foam sponge brushes to paint inside of the heart area.
Once the paint was dried, we peeled back the pink paper, to reveal a cute paint heart on the wax paper. I really love how this craft came out!
