As mothers, we put super high expectations on ourselves to do everything for everyone, and be the perfect mom…which isn’t realistic since there is no such thing as a perfect person. It’s easy to run ourselves ragged in this high-paced world that we live in and burn ourselves out. Taking care of the kids, driving here-and-there, cooking meals, cleaning the house, working, shopping, planning parties, checking email, keeping up with friends…the list of all of the things that contribute to Mom Burnout goes on-and-on.
Here are 10 easy ways to avoid Mom Burnout and have a more peaceful, balanced existence:
1. Take Time for Yourself
Taking care of everyone else can take a big toll on you. Make sure you take time for yourself to rest and rejuvenate. Read a book you enjoy. Get a manicure. Heck, some days I will just settle for taking a shower and call it “me time”!
2. Accept Help
“It takes a village” – remember that saying? Well, it’s true. I wholeheartedly believe that accepting help from others is a smart way to take some of the burden off of your shoulders. Let your husband take the kids out for a little while so you can relax, or let him cook dinner one night. Ask a family member or friend to babysit one evening so you can have a date night. Let your Mother in Law fold the towels sitting on the couch that just came out of the dryer. A little help goes a long way!
3. Get Enough Sleep
Ah, sleep. It’s a tricky thing. As moms, we can get a lot of things done at night once the kids go to sleep. However, it’s easy to stay up way too late and become over tired. A grouchy mom is not generally a good mom. So try to fit in your Zzzz’s.
4. Wake Up Early
This goes hand-in-hand with getting enough sleep. The whole “early to bed, early to rise” thing. If you wake up early you can get a lot accomplished and you feel like you have a huge head start on the day. If you get more accomplished, you’ll feel less likely to burnout!
5. Spend Less Time on Social Media
Social media is a necessary evil, really. We all love to catch up with what our “friends” are doing. The problem lies in when we start comparing our real lives to other people’s social media lives. Let’s face it, no one is like “hey look at me, my life sucks”. People are posting the absolute best stuff they can find about their lives, and polishing it up with some fancy filters so they look awesome. Don’t believe everything you see. You’ll think your life is so much less interesting (which is not true) and that will contribute to mommy burnout, too!
6. Spend More Time With Humans
Humans are pretty awesome. Screens, not so much. Yes, we can learn so much from sitting in front of a screen (be it a TV, computer, tablet, phone, etc). But there’s also SO much to learn from other people, and especially your kids. So, step away from the screen and go spend some time with the people you love.
7. Stop Rushing
Stop. Go to bed early. Wake up early. Get places on time. Stop and enjoy the scenery along the way.
8. Stop Saying Yes to Everyone
You don’t have to over schedule your life to feel fulfilled. It’s ok to have any empty day on your planner. It’s ok to spend the day at home. Then you won’t have to rush around places, and it feels amazing to just relax sometimes!
9. Eat Enough, Drink Enough
Drink enough? I don’t mean the whole bottle of wine! I mean water, and staying hydrated.
Also, don’t forget to have healthy snacks on hand. As moms we are so busy taking care of our families and preparing snacks and meals for everyone else that it’s easy to forget about ourselves.
