Marriage is a funny thing.
You’ve found the person that you are committed to spending the rest of your life with. You marry that amazing human.
You’re so happy, you’re in love, you’re newlyweds and everything is rainbows and unicorns.
As you both settle into your everyday routine of your new life together, you get comfortable. You face new challenges together. Things may, and usually do, become stressful…because that’s just how life works.
Once kids are also in the picture then parenting comes with a whole new set of challenges. Your roles are redefined from husband and wife to mom and dad. But WAIT! You’re still husband and wife even though you’re also a mom and dad.
Growing together, instead of allowing the stressors of life to pull you apart, is definitely something that is vital to a sweet and successful marriage. In our marriage we consciously have to make a decision to focus on each other when things may sometimes get a little hectic, as they often do in life.
I’m certainly not an expert, but there are some things that work for us to stay connected as a couple. These are simple ways to keep your marriage sweet throughout everyday life:
Simple Marriage Advice to Keep Your Relationship Sweet
1. Appreciate Your Partner (and remind them often that you do!) – In our super high-paced world of technology and instant gratification, it’s easy to become dissatisfied with things very quickly.Little gestures can go a long way to let your husband or wife know how much you care about them, and appreciate them. Say thank you to each other. Get up to greet each other at the door with a hug and a kiss. Send each other a quick text message to say “I love you” or “I’m thinking of you” (see my other sweet love text message ideas here).
2. Leave Love Notes – This is one of my favorite things! A love note doesn’t have to be long or elaborate (it can if you’re great with words!)
Something as simple as “Have a great day today! I love you.” on a piece of paper taped to the bathroom mirror is sure to put a smile on your spouse’s face when they wake up in the morning and see a a little gesture of love.
3. Stay Connected – During the day you can send each other a sweet text message to brighten up your spouse’s day. Once at home, staying connected should mean exactly the opposite, and turning off the tech will help to keep you connected. Eat dinner together. Cuddle on the couch with each other. Play with your kids as a family. Take a walk together. Watch your favorite shows together. Talk to each other, and really listen and focus on what the other person has to say!
5. Spend Time Alone – As parents with young children, it’s not always easy to find time alone together. There’s always activities, family outings, a crying kid, or something going on. Here’s the thing – before you had kids, it was just the two of you. When those kids grow older, it will ultimately be just the two of you again.
Spending time alone helps to focus on each other and the common bond you have. Honestly, I believe in having frequent date nights out to dinner or a movie, and even quick overnight little stay-cations to keep the spark alive in my marriage!
Can’t schedule in a getaway? No problem. How about a quick backyard date after the kids have gone to sleep?
