I recently gave birth to our third son. Things around here have been interesting and hectic, to say the least. Someone always needs something, someone is always whining or crying, someone else is hungry…and the list goes on. I knew being outnumbered by small humans would be a lot of work, but I truly didn’t know just how much work it would take to keep everyone happy.
At the end of the day, I am thankful to be a mom to all of my babies, but I am also tired. Which is why one of the most important things I can do for myself to avoid burnout is taking care of myself. I believe that a good self-care routine helps moms rejuvenate and relax a little bit to relieve some of the pressures of the day.
Self Care Tips for New Moms
Here are some of the ways that I take a self-care moment for me:
1. A long hot shower at the end of the day. Never underestimate the power of a shower! I love to rinse off all of the worries (and baby spit up!) after a long day. While I’m in there I can indulge with the Aveeno® Positively Radiant® 60 Second In-Shower Facial to make my shower feel like a spa day! My nightly showers truly help keep me sane after taking care of everyone else all day. After the shower I make sure I erase some of the signs of sleep exhaustion with Aveeno® Absolutely AgelessTM Intensive Renewal Serum. Then, I hydrate my skin and relax before bed with Aveeno® Daily Moisturizing Body Yogurt Vanilla & Oats – this stuff smells amazing, too!
2. Get out of the house. It’s hard to orchestrate the timing of diapers, feedings, etc, but it’s worth it to leave the house for a bit and get some fresh air! I didn’t leave the house for a whole week recently, and I was ready to run away from home at the end of the week (not really, but you get the point). It’s so important to get some sunshine on your body and fresh air in your lungs to keep yourself feeling balanced while in the thick of motherhood.
3. Ask for help if you need it, and accept help if it’s offered. Raising kids truly takes a village. If someone offers to bring a meal over, accept it. If a family member offers to watch the kids for a bit so you can get out of the house or take a shower, accept it! I’ve learned to sometimes put my pride to the side, and accept help, because being SuperMom is a hard job!
These little bits of self-care recharge me emotionally and physically to the point that I’m ready to take on another day of caring for my family.
From work to kids and everything in between, it’s sometimes hard to find “me time”. That’s why Aveeno® is celebrating those who make time for themselves and encouraging those who don’t to take a #MomentForMe through their summer contest. Did you know August 6th is National Friendship Day? Do you have a friend who does everything for everyone else and deserves a moment for themselves? Be sure to nominate them by entering the Aveeno #MomentForMe contest over on Instagram.
