The days are long, the years are short “they” say. They say time flies by in the blink of an eye, and our children’s childhoods will be a big blur when we’re older. Well, they may be right…but damn, sometimes those days are really LONG.
A day in the life of having three small boys is often unglamorous and usually exhausting. By the time I put them to bed I feel like I’ve waged mental warfare all day, and that’s only at 7:30pm. Gone are the days of being able to stay up late and pull all-nighters (unless it’s with a crying baby!)
When your mommy power reserve is running low, it’s time for some of that good old self-care everyone’s been buzzing about. To truly survive the mean streets of the MotherHood, it’s true, we’ve got to take care of ourselves. You can’t pour from an empty glass, or so I’ve heard.
So, to unwind after a long day of momming, here are some great ways to relax:
Surviving “One of Those Days” in the Motherhood
1. Take a hot bath/shower – this always seems to do the trick for me. I like to stand in the shower and literally let the stress of the day melt away. Using a nice new body wash or shampoo makes the experience a bit more indulgent. I like to shower at night once all of the kids have gone to bed to have an uninterrupted cleansing.
2. Write in a gratitude journal – I find that writing down things I’m grateful for helps to put things into perspective for me after a long day. This practice helps recenter my thinking, and brings some peace to my very busy mind.
3. Indulge in a favorite treat – I’ve recently discovered a delicious treat that won’t wreck your New Year’s diet. I was shopping at BJ’s Wholesale Club this past week and found Breyers delights Cookies and Cream ice cream that I can enjoy without guilt. It’s no secret that I’m currently trying to lose the rest of my baby weight from my newest child. With only 330 calories per pint Breyers delights Cookies and Cream ice cream won’t throw me totally off track!
