My kids have been on summer break since the end of May. Here in Central Florida they’ll be heading back to school at the beginning of August. So, there’s only a few short weeks of summer break left!
It is important to me for the kids to enjoy a summer filled with fun while creating priceless memories. We’ve been traveling, swimming in our pool, and trying to enjoy a slow summer.
At the same time, I don’t want the skills that they learned last school year to be totally forgotten.
Tips for Avoiding Summer Slide and Keeping Reading Skills Strong
The “Summer slide” is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. I definitely don’t want that to happen!
So, we are also brushing up on our brain-boosting activities to be ready to head back to school soon.
One huge skill that my oldest son learned last school year was how to read! I am so super proud of him, and he totally amazes me everyday with all of the new words he’s able to read. I want him to be able to hop into first grade in a few weeks and be ready to thrive at school.
Ways we are keeping our vocabulary and reading on point this summer to avoid the “summer slide” –
- Reading books – this is a given! I read to the kids before bedtime, and sometimes I will have my oldest son read to us instead. He likes the chance to shine and show off his reading skills, and I like that it’s keeping his mind sharp.
2. Setting a good example – I keep lots of books around the house, especially on my night table. Research done about the “summer slide” shows that children that see adults in their lives reading often tend to read more themselves.
3. Using helpful apps – There are lots of great apps to help boost vocabulary and reading skills. One that we are currently loving is Words with Friends 2. It is a super fun game that the kids and I can play together. In fact, I used to play Words with Friends when I was pregnant and waiting for the kids to be born! I love that we now play together…such a fun connection!
Words with Friends 2 is the ultimate mobile game to keep you feeling smart, inspired, and connected. It helps my kiddos learn new words, and gain confidence from being able to spell and earn points for their smart word choices!
