Halloween 2018 falls on a Wednesday. Yikes. Last year when it fell on a Tuesday, I learned a ton about how to handle Halloween on a school night. So, this year I am better prepared to have an easy school night Halloween, while also having fun with my kiddos.
With a bit of planning and strategizing in advance, it’s totally possible to handle Halloween like a total Mom Boss and be crowned the Pumpkin Queen!
Here are my best tips for a sweet and not-so-spooky school night Halloween:
How to Have a Not-So-Tricky School-Night Halloween
1. Don’t go over the top on costumes: Last year I learned this the hard way. We LOVE a good family costume. Last Halloween we dressed up as The Addams Family and while the costume was so much fun, it required a ton of makeup and way too much prep work. I won’t make that mistake again on a school night Halloween. This year the kids are rocking simple Walmart costumes, and I’m not one bit ashamed. Easy on, easy off, and in bed on time! Boom!
2. Set expectations in advance – Make a plan and stick to it. Let your kids know what to expect in terms of how many houses/blocks/streets you’re going to trick-or-treat at. This way, you’re not flying by the seat of your pants, and they’ll know when to expect to go home in advance. Give gentle reminders to let them know it’s almost time to head back home (ie: “Ok guys, we have 5 more houses left before we head home to check out our candy stash!”). This will help avoid confusion, and hopefully any meltdowns (wishful thinking?!)
3. Start early – Begin trick-or-treating while it’s still light outside. This way you won’t feel extra pressure to rush through the Halloween fun to get your kids home and in bed at a reasonable time. Plus, it’s safer since cars can still see little ones.
4. Plan dinner in advance – Pizza, y’all. Pizza is my secret weapon for conquering dinnertime on Halloween! It’s something the whole family can agree on and has the power to bring peace, especially at meal time. I mean…what kid doesn’t love a hot and cheesy pizza fresh out of the oven??
My kids currently love Red Baron Pizza! As a mom I love that I can pop it into the oven and by the time the kids have put on their costumes it’s ready to come out of the oven! We can eat before we head out to trick-or-treat so no one is cranky before we hit the streets!
The boys love the Classic Crust Pepperoni Pizza, and my husband and I love the Brick Oven Crust Cheese-Trio Pizza! SOOO good!! Well, to be honest, all of Red Baron Pizzas are delicious, so you really can’t go wrong no matter which one you choose!
With these simple tips on how to handle a school night Halloween, I hope you are able to have a fun and easy night! Maybe you’ll even be able to sneak in a piece of Red Baron Pizza for yourself….before you turn into a scary ChewBacaMama!
