Road trips, you either love them or hate them. Add some babies and kids into the mix, and road trips can get really interesting. My husband and I are both from up north (NY & NJ). Before we had kids we would drive straight through from Florida to NYC without stopping at a hotel. We would take turns driving and sleeping, getting gas, food, and just powering through until we got to our destination.
With kids, it’s a whole different story. You have to plan out your trip a bit better, and can’t really wing it like you can if you’re driving without a baby in the car.
Now that we have three small children, we have become proficient in the art of road trips with kids. We’ve traveled with our kids from young ages, and here are my best road trip tips with a baby and young kids.
Road Trip Tips with Baby – How to Enjoy the Ride
1.Plan ahead – if you’re trying to arrive at your destination at a particular time (let’s say for hotel check-in time), you’ll want to calculate carefully when to leave your home. Now, add in additional time for feedings, diaper changes, gas, etc. Also consider how your baby handles time in the car, and if your baby likes to sleep in the car or look around and be alert. This will help you decide whether to leave at naptime, bedtime, or early in the morning.
2. Entertainment – bring along books, small toys, a baby mirror, and even consider purchasing a few inexpensive new toys to introduce to your baby on the road trip. If you’ll have more than one adult in the car it’s nice to have one sit in the back with the baby to be able to talk to the baby, sing songs, and pick up dropped toys. We have three kids so our older boys usually entertain the baby!
3. Make frequent stops – Life is about the journey and not the destination, right? Well, that’s the way it works on road trips with a baby, too! Plan to make stops for diaper changes, snacks, feedings, and to allow everyone to stretch their legs.
4. Pack a “car bag” – this bag should have essentials just for the car so you don’t have to go digging around in other bags for items you need. Put diapers, baby wipes, a change of clothes, snacks, bottles if you use them, sip cups, and whatever else you’ll need for the car ride specifically in a designated and easily accessible car bag.
5. Safety first – before leaving on your trip make sure that the baby’s car seat is installed properly. We recently upgraded our baby’s car seat to the new Maxi-Cosi Magellan™ Max 5-in-1 Convertible Car Seat. He was so happy to be in his beautiful new seat! It’s soft and comfortable with superior safety features.
